DIY minimalist Christmas ornaments

For about the past two years I’ve been on a mission to refocus the inspiration of my home decor to what I’m calling “mid-scandi-mod” (a blend of mid-century modern and Scandinavian - if that wasn’t apparent).

And to get into the holiday spirit, this year, I tackled a simple DIY project to start overhauling our Christmas decor to match. I’m a huge fan of a good DIY and so when I came across this little project on Pinterest, I decide to give it a try.

If you’re interested in adding a bit of Nordic flair to your tree, it’s actually really simple!

You’ll need:

  • Eucalyptus (I used dried stems I already had at home, but it would work just as well with fresh)

  • Plain Christmas ornaments (I chose round, plastic ones - but if you’re more adventurous you could use glass)

  • A roll of twine or jute

  • Scissors

How to make your ornaments:

It’s really quick and easy to put these together. Set aside some space on a desk or table and away you go.

1. Trim your eucalyptus stems into 2” pieces (or whatever length is best for the ornaments you chose).

2. Remove the cap from the top of the ornament and slide the eucalyptus stem inside. You can leave it with only one stem for a very minimal look, or add more depending on what you like best. I did a mix of single stems and multiple - just to mix it up.

3. After you’ve achieved your desired fill of eucalyptus, put the cap back on the ornament.

4. Cut a 3” piece of twine/jute and tie it to the hook of the ornament so that you can hang it on your Christmas tree and, voila, you’re done!

5. Repeat for as many ornaments as you like.

I’m planning on using these to add some hygge to my Christmas tree, but they would also look beautiful grouped together in a bowl as a centrepiece on your dining room or coffee table.

Merry Christmas!
