5 ways to update your decor during self-isolation
Spending a lot of time at home recently has me keeping busy with design projects big and small. I’ve always felt strongly that making your home a space you love has huge positive effects on your happiness and sense of calm. This is even more true now that we’re all spending significantly more time indoors.
If you’re looking to make some design changes, or even just for something to occupy your time - here are five decor updates you can make during this period of self-isolation.
1. Style your shelves
Spend some time shopping your home (also known as stealing pieces from various other rooms of your house) and switch up (or step up) your shelfie game. Layer objects with varying heights and textures, and mix in a few books or plants to achieve a stylized shelf.
2. Freshen up with florals
Many flower shops are offering curb side pickup or delivery right now (including my yeg go-to Fleurs). Order some of your favourite stems and play around with arranging them in different vases you already have. I’m currently obsessed with dried stems like palm spears and Italian ruscus. If you don’t want fresh, you can also find great faux options on Etsy or Amazon.
3. Turn storage into decor
Instead of hiding your favourite clothing or accessories in drawers or closets, why not put them out of display as decor? Find some fun hooks online (my faves linked) and store hats or jewellery to create wall decor that’s just as functional as it is beautiful.
4. Give accessories a makeover
Lately spray paint has been my best friend (Rustoleum’s Chalked collection is amazing - linen white is my pick) to breathe new life into older decor items that I haven’t used in while. These vases were originally teal (about 10 years ago I had a real thing for teal…don’t ask) but I sprayed them out in this warm off-white colour so they’re a better match for my current style. Super easy to tackle in just a couple hours. You could also use spray paint to overhaul a piece of furniture - just a bit more of a time commitment.
5. Swap out a light fixture
This last idea requires a little bit more planning, but changing out a light fixture is a relatively easy and cost effective way to drastically change a space. I’ve recently switched quite a few lights in our house (goodbye 1987 track lighting) including this IKEA one in my office/loft space. After choosing/ordering the perfect fixture, all you really need is a screwdriver/drill, maybe a ladder or are stool and a bit of patience. If you’re nervous about electrical - don’t be! I followed instructions I find on YouTube and it’s actually quite simple.
Take advantage of this time to update areas of your home and let it be a reflection of who you are and what you love!
