5 must-have blazers
A blazer is one the most versatile pieces of clothing you’ll ever own (IMHO). It’s no surprise that I’m a BIG fan and my collection is a bit over the top (in fact, I’ve lost count…I think my number is somewhere in the 20s).
But if you’re not yet a blazer convert, I’m sharing my picks for 5 must-have styles that are the only styles you’ll ever need, or that could serve as the building blocks of a comprehensive blazer collection.
1. Linen blazer
Since it’s the middle of summer right now, my first pick is any style done in a lightweight linen (or linens blend) fabric. It’s the perfect relaxed, effortless material to complete any summer outfit without feeling overly fussy or heavy. Natural fibres like linen are breathe-able which is a God-send if you’re going in and out of air conditioned spaces (like an office - remember those?).
2. Collarless blazer
This style is a great staple if your job requires a slightly elevated look without being too formal. The lack of collar/lapel and buttons gives a clean, minimalist vibe. If you find one with a fit you like, I’d suggest buying multiples in neutral colours (I grabbed mine in black, white and grey).
3. Camel blazer
This is the only colour specific blazer on the list (I thought black was a no-brainer so why waste a spot). Camel or beige hues vary a lot but fundamentally it’s a universally flattering colour (key is not matching but rather complementing your skin tone). You’ll get just as much wear of out of this blazer as you would a black one - especially in the warmer months - and it doesn’t feel as “suit-ish” as black so it’ll be easier to dress down with jeans.
4. Double-breasted blazer
This style is a classic for a reason! Depending on the fabric you choose it can offer crisp structure to an outfit (done in a cotton/wool or poly blend) or the perfect effortless drape (done in a weighty crepe or modal). The key trait of this style is button(s) on both sides. How many rows of buttons is up to your personal preference (I’m a fan of 2 or 1 typically). Keep in mind the more buttons, the more formal it tends to feel.
5. Cropped blazer
One style you might not consider is a shorter, cropped blazer - but don’t exclude it altogether. A cropped blazer is a must when you’re looking to layer over a dress, jumpsuit or high-waisted pants and don’t want your blazer to overwhelm your look. If you want your natural waist to be the focal point of the outfit, having a short style in basic black is handy to have.
There you have it - my recommendations for must-have blazers you need in your wardrobe. If you’re on the hunt for one (or all) of these styles here are my go-to stores:
